‘Drill Sequence’ takes as its ostensible subject the exercise routines and drills of the military culture, through the lens of multiple open-source generative artificial intelligence networks. The work consists of 8-second video frames each prompted by the artist in which various cadences of voices and bodily movements digress into distinct studies. The work is composed of two-channel sound, with one channel consisting of the artist reading out-loud the prompts that were fed to the networks to produce the frames. The prompts were taken from a 30 steps military warm up routine.
Foundational AI models function by calculating the probability distribution across all possible words or pixels. They use the patterns they learn during training and tuning to calculate the most probable output to a given prompt. I was interested in how the ‘data’ of different forms of regimented performances and militaristic attitudes may intersect.
Modern Technological infrastructures have always been deeply intertwined with military apparatuses, and today Artificial Intelligence makes it all the more obvious as AI-enabled weapons are reshaping modern warfare.
Taken together, the work constructs a multi-layered social portrait where militarized spectacle, and information technology collide.
